The legendary David
Croft, Jimmy Perry sitcom took to the stage again in the
summer of 2008 for an incredible 25th
anniversary UK tour and which was to prove so popular, it
continued through to July of the following year. Produced
by Calibre Productions, the show opened to rapturous
cheers, thunderous applause and a standing ovation at the
Gordon Craig Theatre, Stevenage on the 29th
August and received a similar reaction playing to sell out
houses all over the country.
Judy was cast in the pivotal role of Michelle of the
Resistance, much to her delight, playing opposite husband
Jeffrey Holland in the leading role unlikely war hero and
sex symbol, café owner Rene Artois. The actress admits to
the offer of the role coming as something of a surprise.
With Jeff already cast, she confides that the request to
meet the casting director for an audition was unexpected
but very welcome and despite the link, there was never any
question that she would be shown any favouritism. It was
very much a case of earning the role by right. In point of
fact it was a role for which she was ideally suited not
least with her natural gift for comedy timing but also her
impeccable diction, particularly prevalent when
interpreting between Rene and the English airmen. “I did
feel confident I could play the role but it was a
challenge to make it my own after Kirsten Cooke.” said
Judy. “I have to say the catchphrases and the iconic
costume helped enormously and I loved every minute of
every performance. Not just because it gave me another
opportunity of working with Jeff but because of the
enthusiastic responses of the audiences. It was wonderful
to hear such laughter night after night. The show was so
well loved that people still remember it with such great
affection and the characters are so well defined. It’s not
really surprising the tour attracted such much attention,
it’s the show itself that is the real star.”
