Taking its inspiration
from such series as The Army Game and Dad’s Army, Get Some
in is another quality sitcom from the superior writing of
John Esmonde and Bob Larbey also responsible for the
hugely successful BBC series The Good Life. Set in the
1950’s at the fictitious RAF Midham, a training camp for
draftees embarking on National Service. The recruits, a
motley crew from varied walks of life, comprise of teddy
boy, Jakey Smith (Robert Lindsay), nice but dim Bruce
Leckie, (Brian Petifer), clergyman’s son Matthew Lillie,
(Gerard Ryder and grammar school boy, Ken Richardson
(David Jansen). All are united by one common bond, their
mutual hatred of the Officer in Charge of their basic
training, Corporal Percy Marsh (Tony Selby). Always ready
to inflict misery on his rookies but not the brightest
bulb in the box, Marsh himself is frequently hauled over
the coals by his Commanding Officer, Squadron Leader Baker
(John D. Collins) resulting in equal loathing all round.
Following their induction, the group are assigned to train
as nursing assistants along with Corporal Marsh whom they
soon become adept in outwitting.
In the episode entitled
The Crash, the team are sent to treat casualties from a
simulated aircraft crash. A catalogue of unexpected events
leads them to transport a genuine accident victim to the
local cottage hospital where they while away the time
waiting for treatment to be administered to their patient.
Still swathed in the bandages of their own mock injuries,
confusion abounds when a young nurse played by Judy
believes Jackey to be badly hurt. Needless to say the
young opportunist waists no time in taking full advantage
of her caring ministrations. In a short but sweet
performance, Judy convinces as the sensitive carer from
Lancashire who is as equally concerned with raising her
invalid’s morale as she is tending to his medical needs! |
